No offence, but it sounds like you were playing Basic/Expert D&D while carrying your hardbacks to the table. This of course would be fine on my account; I've played AD&D 1 (is there any other?) and enjoyed it but when I run a game its Basic all the way! I've always been a rules lite kind of guy though. Rangers, half-elves, demi-human thieves, half-orcs, and clerics who can cast spells at 1st level seem to be the main sticking points for people who would rather play de facto Basic D&D while carrying around their AD&D hardbacks than actually play Basic D&D (nevermind that all of these but the last two were present in OD&D supplements and can be quickly and painlessly house-ruled back into Basic D&D). That plus the 'kiddie D&D' stigma, which was very real at the time even if we tend to forget it nowadays, and the fact that there was a ton more stuff that claimed it was for use with AD&D -- modules, World of Greyhawk, Fiend Folio & Monster Manual II, Dragon articles, etc. If you played Basic D&D you felt like you were on the outside of the hobby looking in (sorta like how we non-3E/d20 players feel now).

Well, much as I like AD&D,i've done many a BD&D game-light rules, modular for plenty of tinkering, and BD&D will accept demi-human classes easily enough if a player wants an Elven Thief or Dwarven Cleric.AD&D was always my "pretty much as is but leave off a few things",whereas BD&D was for tinkering and general weird concepts-"hey,let's do Orcs and Goblins with a rogue alpha Werewolf for good measure!"). And i've never been ashamed of ANY of my RPG's.I am what I am.

Actually, at risk of being flamed back to the stone age, I feel the need to confess I ALWAYS took the "A" in Advanced D&D to mean optional add-on material. After 22 years of BD&D gaming, I now have all sorts of things in my BD&D campaigns that I think work far better than AD&D by the book- 1/2 Orcs, Gnomes, Healers, Assassins, Etc. They work better for ME because its my world. I always thought D&D was supposed to be MY platform to build upon...........

You won't be flamed back to the Stone Age for saying that, Wisp. As far as I'm concerned, D&D is supposed to be house ruled. I do just want to point out, though, that this forum's called "By the book AD&D".

I do just want to point out, though, that this forum's called "By the book AD&D". And.........uh........that applies to a thread entitled "LEAST used official rules" how? BTW, I love the little guzzeling emoticon ;D
