Please! ;D Yeah know North, you are absolutely right. Unless you specifically want to be an Illusionist multi-class or be one for role-playing reasons, I just don't see it being at the top of the "best race to be" list. Other races make much better characters. Though I must admit. I've always had a special place in my heart for gnomes and have played more than a few back in the day. <hangs head in shame>

Gnomes rock, they're way better than those annoying little hairy-footed things called Dildo. They've got a widely-applicable AC bonus (which, unlike dwarfs, extends to gnolls and bugbears as well), most of the saving throw bonuses that dwarfs get, similar underground abilities in terms of determining direction etc., and coolest of all, the ability to converse with badgers. The only sense in which gnomes are an "afterthought" is that they don't get munchkiny ability score bonuses.

Plus, at least as NPCs (per the DMG) they and only they can be multiclassed illusionist/asassins, which is about the coolest class combo there is.

Dz: "I don't want to rely too much on "mistakes" and "what feels like AD&D" as it opens a can of worms regarding the interpretation of the "feel" of the game. "
I have recently dumped all of my house rules in favor of pure AD&D and so far have found that my house rules in the end did not imrpove the game. This class" Gnombe illus/fighter hasn't come up yet. However, I suppose I will dump this "house rule" as well, and see how it plays out. One thing it will do is discourage this combination, which isn't a bad thing I suppose (given the power of the illusionist).
