I also simply want to say that this is a great peice of work.

Being like many or a few others (as the case may be) that has yet been able to afford to invest in the old individual copies of the M&TA, this has become a valuable asset in my OD&D box.

Am I the only one who's ever wished we could see the tables that were used to create this product -- especially the treasures? The results are somewhat close to, but don't quite match, any of the tables from any of the other books -- either OD&D or AD&D -- and I've always wondered what the methodology was (not least so I could make up my own 'new' assortments -- after using these for awhile the results start to become predictable, especially the magic items at lower levels -- what another Manual of Puissant Skill at Arms?!). I wonder if perhaps there weren't any actual tables and EGG (or whoever designed these -- no author is credited) just 'eyeballed' everything? (Knowing EGG's style that's actually likely the case...).

Hey! I just noticed that my list of changes (the very same list posted here) has finally been posted at The Acaeum (about 6 months after I submitted it). I'm famous (even though they credited me by my real name rather than my web-pseudonym )!

I got bored last night (gotta have something to keep my mind busy while watching American Idol...) and started working up a database of all the monsters in the M&TAs. The results were pretty interesting (at least to me) -- which monsters appear most frequently on each levels, which levels have the most and least variety of monsters (variety is pretty much a pyramid, peaking at level 6 which has, IIRC, 77 different monsters in its 100 listings), watching how numbers appearing increase when the same monsters are encountered on higher levels (there's an encounter with 8-64 giant rats on level 6!), etc. This also confirmed what I'd already suspected before, that there was definitely room for a set 4: levels 10-12 (several of the high end monsters -- liches, beholders, iron golems, balrogs, etc. never appear, and several more only appear in very small quantities on levels 8-9 (I'd have loved to have seen a level 12 list that included things like "vampires (2-8)"). I'll try to post some of this when I get a chance both because IMO it's pretty interesting and also if I share this info the act of compiling it won't seem like quite as big a waste of time

I'd eventually like to do something similar with the treasure listings (showing, for instance, what are the percentages of CP vs SP vs EP vs GP vs PP vs Gems vs Jewelry vs magic for each level, and what are the minimum, maximum, and average values for each), but it'll probably be awhile before I'm bored enough to actually sit down and do that.

As mentioned above, here's the index I made of the monster listings in the M&TAs. It's in two parts -- by level, showing the number of occurences and number appearing for each monster on that level's list, then by monster name showing each level that monster appears on. Eventually I'd like to combine both of these into a big excel chart listing every monster cross-referenced withits number appearing on each level, which would make it easier to interpolate/extrapolate blank entries (i.e. giant ants don't show up until level 7, but that listing is for 10-50, so obviously it should be possible to encounter smaller numbers of giant ants on higher levels) and additional levels (10+), but I haven't made such a chart yet, and even when/if I do I don't think it'd be practical to post it here (coding a table that big would be nightmarish -- unless someone knows a shortcut?). Anyway, without further ado (this'll probably be broken into several parts, because it's long):

Wonderful work foster. This is definitely getting save to the HDD.

Does anyone else find it interesting are the couple of creatures that have the possibility of an encounter on only one level? I'm not talking about the cloud giant on level 9 or some of the other baddies. They are probably too tough to be encountered in the dungeon any earlier.

I'm talking about the few that just seem too random, specifically:

Giant Ants: 7
Otyughs: 6
Troglodytes: 6

Yeah, there are several oddities like that -- others include Brown Mold, Hobbit Hero/Thief, Dwarf Pilferer, Ranger Lord, etc. Interesting that many/most of these oddities are all on the same list (level 6).

Adding to the mystery is that several creatures (including a suspiciously high overlap with the aforementioned "anomaly" creatures) weren't (AFAIK) actually described in any OD&D sources and didn't make their "official debut" until the AD&D Monster Manual. These are:

Brown Mold
Neo-otyugh
Otyugh
Troglodyte

It's enough to make me suspect that the anomaly-filled level 6 list was written either by another person or at another time (or both) from the other lists.

EDIT: Note also that the anomaly-filled level 6 list is the only one to specify alignments for fighters ("evil heroes" and "evil champions") -- clerics need their alignment specified to know which versions of the spells they get (normal or reversed), but there's no reason I can see why you'd need to specify fighters' alignments.

I bet as this was going to press they lost or wrecked the original level 6 list and somebody had to throw a replacement list together at the last moment and it didn't get the same kind of editorial scrutiny as the other lists.
