It seems to require a whole lot of dice with your system, Radagast. What made you decide to do it that way?

That's a neat system, Radigast...thanks for posting it!
I've been feeling that my players might enjoy rolling (x)d6 more than d20 these day, cause then the fighters get to roll a fistful of dice just like those lucky fireball-casters.

It seems to require a whole lot of dice with your system, Radagast. What made you decide to do it that way? 1.) I was just always wanted a system where PCs can take an active defense (i.e. die roll) to protect themselves. The Harn system is/was great in this regard, but, the Harn system is SUPER RULES HEAVY, and not a system that I would want to use on a regular basis. A system where a PC could roll a die (be it for a shield block, parry, or dodge) and cross index it somehow versus an attack is a good thing. The chainmail system does this ... sorta. 2.) Looking for a method to have a more "Old School" feel to OD&D, the table was from Chainmail 3rd edition Combat Tables in appendix A. And seeing an "alternative" system (being the one everyone is familiar with) was not the original system (i.e. chainmail) made me wanna use it. I have been working on the Man to Man Melee Table, Individual Fires with Missiles Table, and the Fantasy Combat Table from Chainmail ... I would love to use that/those tables in OD&D, but, just making it work is hard (considering PCs can achieve different levels besides; Hero, Super Hero, or Wizard, and the addition of alot of monsters not covered in Chainmails Fantasy Combat Table). But, I am working on it, when its done I will post a .pdf of it.

In Dragon Magazine #11 on pg 7 there is a brawling and grappling combat system for D&D using d6's only I have been considering using it in my own campaign I am putting together. Also on pg 26 & 27 of that issue are quarter staff fighting rules that if I am not mistaken use d6's only also. Just FYI

While we are talking about dice, would the following be useful?
How about 2d6 but read like d%, resulting in a range of numbers from 11-66. This has some advantages. You can use only d6s, but it gives a wider range of results than if the two dice were added together, plus gives linaer probability like d% or a d20 roll. You could use a different colored die for the tens and the ones, just like d%. I would really love to use this, but not sure how to make it work with combat and saving throws. Once I do, that is going to be my core mechaninc.

Anyone using 2d6 (or thinking of it)...what do you do in mass combat situations where there are a lot of npc's?
I'd love love love to convert to a bell-curve combat resolution system, but it seems useful mostly for 1-on-1 combats rather than ones like "20 goblins riding wargs attacking 8 pc's + 4 henchmen".
As a DM, would you just go with different-colored/sized "pairs" of dice so that you could throw a fistfull and be able to separate them out later?
