this seems to be one of the few forums still dealing with dungeons and dragons (not the money-making machine 3rd edition or 3.5 edition - but the "real" stuff) - so here i am.
two days ago i have rediscovered my d&d-boxes, books, adventures... and i think it's a good thing to play with my daughter (11 years old). even my wife has rolled up a character yesterday. today we're going to tackle a little intro-adventure - but tomorrow it's going to be the palace of the silver princess. let's see if it still has got the magic of the mid-eighties...

nice! a few of the links are indeed new to me.
could you give me the address of the "real" board - and when will it be online again?
as to my name - it's a long story. to make it short, it's a name of an orc fighter i once played in a play-by-mail-(REAL mail)-rpg. he died alone in a huge jungle when i didn't want to spend more money.

www.knights-n-knaves.com/phpBB/Don't know when it'll be online again. They're having technical difficulties at the moment. But it'll be announced here when it's back. Play by snail mail? Good Lord, you must be very dedicated! Can you tell us more about your gaming preferences? Which editions you have played the most? Which ones you like the best and why? If you don't mind of course.

hmmm... i started with d&d in 1982/83 then i switched to "das schwarze auge" an early german d&d-clone. (funny about this is, that i got to know this typical german game in france and played it with my french friend - so for me it's still no "das schwarze auge" but "l'oeil noir".)
i soon found out that this game sucked and returned to d&d. i don't know how - but i completely overlooked ad&d 1st edition (though i bought all available material later) und loved ad&d second edition. most of the time we played in the forgotten realms or dark sun settings.
in the meantime i tried a lot of different systems (rolemaster, runequest, lotr-rpg, shadowrun, vampire...) but always came back to ad&d 2nd edition.
when 3e came out i bought a few of the rules books and played a few games, but when 3.5 came out i decided to quit playing ad&d and spend my money on better things.
a few months ago we moved from "wonderful" alken to "wonderful" lehmen (two nice villages) and we still have got 50 to 60 big boxes with all kinds of stuff that we haven't unpacked yet. now three days ago i found my d&d-stuff and decided to give it another chance and to play it with my daughter, wife and a few friends as it's a nice and easy system, i still remember most of the charts and rules and i have a lot of adventures (perhaps 10-15 i wrote wyself) - so we can start playing immediately.
it's a great thing that there still are people on the net who play this dinosaur of a role playing game! ;D

Wow! Someone else who has heard of Das Schwarze Auge! I've actually translated some of the German stuff and adapted a few cultures and the main pantheon to my home campaign.
Congrats on your "new" find. May they bring you many more hours of fun and adventure.

NO?!? how did you get "dsa"-stuff in new orleans/houston? i thought noone outside germany knew the system. at the time when i played it, it was just a weaker version of d&d - but the newer editions are really good. i must admit it even though i'm so "old" that the war between d&d and dsa is still in my head. in the 80s it was a bit like the fight between amiga and atari st-computer users. ;D
