Frankly, One doesnt need them in OD&D as you have shown the many reasons why. Although we did have "thief like" characters pre-suppliment.
They were based on Dex and Cha as you suggest with character development/background and RPing taking care of the rest.
The same could be said for other editions. But I dont think adding of the thief archtype really diminishes the presteige of the Fighter that much. Yes the thief can use the same weapons even the same armour, but the restrictions: armour vs. ability, to hit numbers, and hit die type still keep the Fighter as the #1 Guy with a Sword and Shield.
But again, they are not necessary... no more so than a Barbarian is or other "special" sub-class or class. Most can easily be achived by simply playing with stats, creating the proper background, and RPing it. But like most things that progress, people want more fixed rules to go by. Hence the advent of AD&D.

Heh!
I like your method BETTER! Why we never saw that.... *yeesh*
Much simpler, less math... and would fit just as well into our house rule. Roll the d6's for each sucessful hit by the orcs, roll the d6's for the Hero's hit dice, subtract the penality from the Hero's dice... compare results... bingo... result.... bound or combat resumes. heh.
THIS IS WHY OD&D IS MY FIRST LOVE! It takes some monsterous effort to break the system.

I really dont think there ever was an "out" for the Hero. Since it reads "if his score with 4 dice is less than their score with 2 dice he has been pinned helplessly[/b]."
One then would surmise that the Hero at this point could be bound and or beat to unconciousness at the will of the orcs.
We didnt like this much so we tinkered a bit...
First i must mention that it wasnt clear what determined the "total score" of the Orcs, how it was derived. We assumed it was from a percentage.
"i.e... and the Orcs scored but 8..."
Assume the following dice scores for the Orcs attacks: Orc #1 - 06; #2 - 10; #3 - 18; #4 - 20; #5 - 03
Total of the Successful to hit scores = 38 Number of attack rolls = 5 38/5=7 rounded up to 8
This still may be wrong... after all these years! But based on this, this is what we do.
Once the inital successful grapple happens, the next combat phase, the "orcs" would autmaticly go first. They gain the +3 to hit bonus since the "Hero" is prone/immoble. ( I cant find the rule on "prone" but it is on my JG DM Shield)
One or more (no more than two usually) of the orcs can make rolls to hit to secure the hands and/or feet of the Hero with the same +3 bonus instead of maintaining the grapple. If no other orc makes a successful to hit, the attempt to bind automatically fails. One or more of the orcs can also attempt to pummel him to unconsciousness instead of or in addition to binding him.
When the Hero has his turn, to sucessfully overcome the attack he must just like the the rules say, overcome the score of the orc sucesses on his dice. BUT... he is -1 per successful grappler and binder. In example, if 4 orcs are successful in holding and binding him, the Hero is -4 to his averaged total on his dice. This does not include the sucessful to hit rolls by the Orcs, if any, trying to pummel him.
for example.
Five orcs roll to hit vs AC 5 (no shield since pinned): 7, 14, 14, 16, 15
Total Orc Avg: Successes/5=15
Hero rolls: 18, 18, 10, 16 Total rolls= 62
Total Hero Avg: 16-4 = 12 Hero Fails.
If the Hero is successful, he tosses them off as per the rules and is not grappled and bound. If he ties or fails, he is fully bound and captured.

Heh
I would imagine its 50/50 on which way it came about!
Either they eyeballed it
or
They had so many reams of paper filled with stuff that narrowing it down to a managible list made it a harrowing experience!

First I want to thank Foster for letting us post this. I also simply want to say that this is a great peice of work.
Being like many or a few others (as the case may be) that has yet been able to afford to invest in the old individual copies of the M&TA, this has become a valuable asset in my OD&D box.

Thanks and all credit goes to T.Foster for putting this work together.
Here's a more or less complete list of the differences between the 1977-78 (separate) and 1980 (combined) versions of the Monster & Treasure Assortments. Obviously a lot of these changes, especially at the lower levels, were made to try and match the content and conventions of the Moldvay-edit Basic Set (type-names for snakes, lizards, spiders, etc., class level titles, no paladins, etc.), but it's equally obvious that whoever did the editing/updating had no real idea of what was going to be in the Expert Set. It's also apparent that the editor the 1980 set flinched in a big way at the number of magic items given out in the original edition's lists.

www.knights-n-knaves.com/phpBB/The time has come. The "on-site" webforum at Knights-N-Knaves.Com is set up and ready to go. Current posts are being moved there as I type this. The Proboards K&KA has been switched to Read-Only and will remain as an archive for the older posts. You will still have your membership at the old site so you will still be able to acess the registered members only sections and read those as well. I know no one likes to move. All the headaches and packing is a real pain. But in this case we have made it pretty easy for most all of you and the benefits will be greater in the end. To transfer over to the New K&KA, all you have to do is follow the above link, register on the new site and start posting like before. Those folks with special ranks or permissions will be granted the same settings at the new location, but there may be a 12-24 hour lag before all of your previliges are restored. The new site runs under phpBB. It has many more features (that i dont have to pay for) than proboards. We will be able to add graphics to posts and also have better file sharing/handling capabilities. It is also much more secure. If you have any problems registering on the new site; contact admin@knights-n-knaves.com and we will get you fixed up ASAP. Thank You Jerry Mapes Knights & Knaves Admin

Stuart Marshall and Knights & Knaves Alehouse are proud to present the next installment of a trilogy of modules... Stuart Marshall's ( a.k.a. PapersAndPaychecks), The module is now available for download in the downloads section of the Knights & Knaves website. The Melford Murder is an Original AD&D Mini-Adventure for 4-8, 1st Level Characters. It can be played as a stand alone or can be played as part two of the three part series which includes The Spider Farm, The Melford Murder, and (the upcomming) Shrine of the Oracle. The people of the small village of Melford are stunned when one of the most prominent citizens is found dead one morning. Clues are scarce, suspects are everywhere, and the constabulary is stumped. A rich reward has been offered to anyone who can help drag the killer out of the web of shadow and intrigue they have woven around themselves. This great new module can be found at WWW.KNIGHTS-N-KNAVES.COM
