Stuart Marshall's ( a.k.a. PapersAndPaychecks), The Spider Farm module is available for download. The Spider Farm is an Original AD&D Mini-Adventure for 4-8, 1st Level Characters. Ulayah Reyn and his family are simple silk harvesters with a business to run. But someone or something out there see's the farm as an easy mark for ill-gotten gain. A raid is imminent, will you make it in time to prevent it? Stuarts module can be found at the K&K Website Gaming Downloads Section and at the Dragonfoot website. Thanks for the Contribution, Stuart. (note- sorry it took so long to announce this here, I actually thought i had already done so!)

On the Subject of File Sharing and where Knights & Knaves and The Knights & Knaves Alehouse stands:
File shareing of copyrighted material is a fact of life; it is going to happen. But due to the recent crack downs on file sharing and anti-share snoops all over the net, K&K and K&K Alehouse will not allow transactions to be discussed in the forums. This would pose to great a risk to the Alehouse and the website.
Now, what members and visitors do in the privacy of a PM or email is completely up to them. We can not regulate that.
Thank You. Jerry Mapes Knights & Knaves Owner

Some have found it difficult to find the Dice Roller.
My error, I didnt say exactly where it was.
On the Website menu or here on the Forum, in the footer, you can click on the words "Dice Roller" and since it is Java; it will pop up in a small seperate window. It will not close when you enter Chat. It must be closed manually after chatting/playing.
Also it does not automaticlly put the results in the chat room. I am still looking for a Dice roller compatable with our chatroom that can jsut run as a script. So if you are playing a game you are on the honor system.
If anyone knows of a better chat program with dice rolling built in that doesnt take a PHD to install, please let me know.

The Knights & Knaves Alehouse Chat is now available via the Chatroom link in the footer of each page.
There are 3 Game rooms, 3 discussion rooms, a lounge and users can make thier own public or private rooms as needed.
I am looking for a dice roller that will work within myphpchat. Currently there is a java dice roller available but it will not post results to the chatrooms.

Welcome to the Knights & Knaves Alehouse.
ALL Boards on this Forum are setup so that only Members of this Forum may post and reply. Although, many boards here may be read by the Public. Some Boards are "read restricted" to members only and those such as the Admin and Special Projects areas may only be read my Members who also have special permission via password.
Membership here is simple. Register and follow the rules.
This board is unashamedly and proudly GYGAXIAN. This board is for the discussion of OLD SCHOOL gaming. Specifically:
Original Dungeons & Dragons - the little books
First Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
Judges Guild products for OD&D & AD&D
There is also room for special projects by board members that want to create adventures for OD&D and AD&D.
I have, as an aside, added a Misc. Game area that will cover a few other games i like to play:
Battletech Traveller Call of Cthulhu Tunnels and Tolls Solo Adventures Holmes Basic D&D
I only have FOUR RULES:
1) This board does not support D20 products, Fantasy or Otherwise. Discussion of D20 products is not allowed. There are 1000's of websites devoted to D20 games, this IS NOT one of them. So don't post about d20
2) This board does not support the "other" editions of D&D (Moldvay, Cook, Mentzer, 3.x) nor AD&D (2e). If you feel you must expound on these other versions, feel free to go to Dragonsfoot or Enworld to post them there. Otherwise don't post about them.
3) There is a Terms of Service agreement you must agree to when you sign up on Proboards. Read it. Abide by it.
4) These rules are subject to changes without notice at the descretion of the Admin.
Breaking of rules 1-3, the first time, will result in a warning. The second time will result in a Ban.
The Management.

So, all in all, thieves are not the youngest starting class, and I'd say a good case could be made that they start their training ealier than 16. Yup I will cop to not looing it up and being accurate ;D But dangnit i have an excuse... i'm 35 miles from my books. Heh.

I had never seen that article. Yup EW is one of my tops when it comes to RPGs. I am an Amber Fan afterall.
I think the article really hits home. I too have a now 9th lvl Human Thief, one of my few high level characters. He had good rolls except for hit points. EW's approach is basically what i did too. Anything i could do to avoid the fight or trap i would do it. If i couldnt do it then i would do whatever i could to CHEAT. Not in the dice roll sense but cheat the fight. Like those examples by Foster. Back em over a ledge, pull a curtain on them, toss pepper or lime in thier face and that was only IF and I mean IF lying thru my pearlywhites (in character) to the NPC.
Yeah the thief has a tough row to hoe at low levels but the way i always understood it was this way. Look at the Ages of starting characters for the classes. IIRC Thieves start out at 1st level very very young compared to most other classes. When Gary spoke about the thieves guilds he made it pretty clear that yes thses kids started out very young, 5 or 6 yrs old as beggers and grab and runs, it wasnt till they reached IIRC 16 that they got to be a true beginning thief. Zero-First level they got their starting stats. (obvious i know)
I think the starting numbers could be bumped and the progresson method you listed, used. I woldnt have aproblem with it. But i have to remember too that the Thief wasnt around till much later in the game development. Maybe it was simply that since he was a late comer to the party, he didnt get the full benefits that those at the beginning got. As much as I love a good thief in the group, I still can live without them. We did it for yrs in the LBBs.

And maiming/nasty-injury systems are better suited for games like Stormbringer or Rolemaster. Arghhhh those Crit hit/crit fumble charts from Dragon... that was fun for about 5 mins. {hombrew alert} we have used the max damage on natural d20 with one caveat. If the needed to hit was 20 or less then max damage. If the needed to hit was 21 or higher, normal damage. {/homebrew alert} Jerry

(This may server better in the Homebrew setting)
Critical Hits.
Whta are the rules laid out for them? Should they even be used?
After all, a roll of 20 already gets the bonus of hitting more then one AC Bonus.

This is a rare thing indeed in most campaings i have been in.
I can think of only 2 times over the years this came up and in those cases the DM at the time pretty much just did what Rob did, sans wish. Most everyone plays humans.
Now there were some instances back in the late 80's where a lot of the players were playing elves and half-elves everytime one turned around... but most of those games dried up before max levels were reached so it just never came up.
If it came up down the road for one of my groups i could live with your option (a.) or Rob's method for use with demi-humans.
Wish i could add more... but since it has never really came up much, I havent put much thought into it.
J.

I think that is the missing link in this puzzle. You guys have nailed it I believe.
I had never carried it out that far but seeing it laid out like so... it makes perfect sense.

As for the second problem, I have to agree as well. Which begs the question, at least for me, when did EGG begin working on his 2nd Ed.?
Many of the "other classes/professions" he introduced via Dragon did this as well. Its the differences we see in the UA material and Dragon that makes one realize to some extent just how far EGG was going to take his 2e.
