Besides TFosters current character in the running B2 game I have never seen anyone adhear to the size req. for the MU spell book, esp. not at low level. Is that your experiance as well?
These books seem a bit restrictive considering most MUs have enough trouble carrying themselves around.

The assumption of the game from the beginning was that magic-users' spell books would be left at home (the Holmes Basic set goes so far as to make this a mandatory rule: "spell books can't be carried into the dungeon"). However, players weren't satisfied by that and started wanting to carry their spell books with them (because there are all kinds of good reasons to do so -- not least so you don't have to return to town/base every single day to re-memorize your spells), so I'm assuming that EGG deliberately made spell books so huge and hard to carry (enc. value 450 g.p.) in an attempt to discourage this practice and get magic-users back to leaving their spell books at home like they're supposed to. It's similar to the approach a lot of 3E rules take -- they won't say "you can't do this" but they'll give you a set of rules for it that are so disadvantageous that most people will (theoretically) decide they don't want to do it (casting spells in armor, picking up cross-class skills, etc.). Oh and (as you may have guessed) I always made magic-users keep track of the size and weight of their spell books in my games

TFoster: "Oh and (as you may have guessed) I always made magic-users keep track of the size and weight of their spell books in my games. " A harsh task master!

We've always done this Axe, dating back to 1980 or so.

Well, I guess this idea just doesn't fit our groups concept of what adventure is all about (wondering anyplace, the possibility of being teleported 1000 miles away, being chased out of town etc.). However, I suppose I will start doing this in our games. Hell thats what charm persons all about right?
So is a first level spell book 95% blank pages? Is there other information in a spell book (moon charts, methods for storing spell components, hand position charts, etc. if so it would be pretty cool).
