Okay, maybe I'm a complete idiot. Where in the TLBB (Three Little Brown Books) does it tell you how to calculate experience points? I read the blurb in Men & Magic about the Magic-User and the experience points for the gold from the defeated Troll. But it also says you can get XP from monsters defeated and for magic items. Where is this elucidated?

Where is this elucidated? It isn't . The paragraph you cite (vol. I p. 18) is the only place in the rules that explains how experience points are given out. The famous OD&D FAQ in The Strategic Review vol. I no. 2 expands on this a bit: But that's it. Note that Supplement I gives an alternative formula for determining experience from monsters (the same familiar chart used in later editions of Classic D&D), but I'd only recommend using that chart if you're also using the other additions from Supp I (exceptional strength, variable weapon damage, etc.) which tend to give characters more advantage over monsters (and thus make the generally lower awards justified).
