I understand in OD&D elves dwarves and halflings were fixed into professions (so to speak). Are there other races as well locked into professions? IF not has anyone made some up?
Half Orc, Gnombe, etc.

Half Orc, Gnombe, etc. According to the original rules, without supplements... Dwarves were fighters Hobbits were fighters Elves alternated between fighter and magic-user Greyhawk added the thief class allowing... Dwarves to be fighers, thieves, or fighter/thieves Hobbits to be fighters, thieves, or fighter/thieves Elves to be fighter/m-u's, theives, or fighter/m-u/thieves. Half-elves were also added at this time and, if I recall correctly, they could be all the classes elves can as well as mulit-classed clerics. I don't believe that any of the other supplements gave additional possibilities for demi-humans. Half-orcs and gnomes weren't added as official pc races until the 1e PHB. R.A.

So, if you were to introduce these two (HO and Gn.) what would you allow?

So, if you were to introduce these two (HO and Gn.) what would you allow? I suppose I'd allow more-or-less the same as AD&D -- half-orcs can be fighters, thieves, fighter/thieves, fighter/clerics, cleric/thieves (and if Blackmoor is being used assassins, fighter/assassins, and cleric/assassins); gnomes can be fighters, thieves, fighter/thieves (and if the illusionist class from The Strategic Review #4 is being used fighter/illusionists and illusionist/thieves). Of course at this point most players would ask why not just play AD&D instead, and they'd be right... In a thief-less OD&D campaign adding these races is perhaps a bit more feasible -- half-orcs are fighters only (and function as sort of an 'alternative dwarf'), gnomes are either fighters (functioning as 'alternative hobbits') or fighter/illusionists (functioning as 'alternative elves').

Weren't gnomes considered a dwarf sub-race in OD&D? I would treat gnomes exactly like dwarfs in OD&D.
I would make half-orcs fighters that can be 2 levels higher than a dwarf. I wouldn't allow them to be clerics or thieves (although I might let them be assassins or fighter/assassins if Blackmoor is used).
Oh, and I don't think hobbits could be fighter/thieves in OD&D + Greyhawk, IIRC they can be fighters or thieves but not both.

Oh, and I don't think hobbits could be fighter/thieves in OD&D + Greyhawk, IIRC they can be fighters or thieves but not both. That is what Supp I says/implies, but the Monster & Treasure Assortment set 2 muddies the waters by including a "hobbit hero/thief," so who knows what the actual intent was. Along those same lines the description of the thief class in Supp I states that half-elves can be thieves, but the description of the half-elf race never mentions it. So can they or can't they? Is there a single correct answer or not? It was stuff like this that made AD&D necessary...

Weren't gnomes considered a dwarf sub-race in OD&D? I would treat gnomes exactly like dwarfs in OD&D. I believe the stats for the Gnome 'monster' said to treat gnomes just like dwarves. So I'd do the same thing, make them skinny dwarves. If I decided they could use magic, I'd have them double class like elves as an option. As for a half-orc, I'd probably just treat them like an ugly human. No special powers besides speaking 'orcish' from the start. R.A.
