Normally I have run my games with every second of the characters' lives covered, except when we skip past the non-exciting events. In other words, it's largely player-determined what events receive focus.
We just decided that I'm going to run the game in "episodes," where I determine the moments at which the action begins and what happened in between. In other words, our adventures will be starting out with the very Gygaxian, "your adventures have taken you to a small village at the edge of the forest..."
This is going to be good.
